He didn't say the current setting, but he does a lot of pipe fence.He is not at all mechanical or electrically knowledgable, but I've done lots of engine and electrical troubleshooting & repair, just never on a welder.My thinking is that once I get it I will check things like the air filter to see if it's blocked, throttle linkage or some other obvious reason for power loss. (refrigerator, lights, furnace, washer etc).He did know enough about it that he was somehow able to manually manipulate the throttle and he said he had to run it wide open to make an arc. I expect to see him today and will try to see if he has gotten the exact model yet. He is not a pro weldor, rather a farmer rancher using the welder part of the time.Any ideas or pointing me toward service manuals or information will be appreciated. Then maybe do a compression or leak down check.He said that he thought that the engine might be worn out, so he must have used it for a long time.

Do you guys happen to know what model Tecumseh engine is typically used on these? I got the Miller part number for the engine which is 070 732 but haven't been able to get much from that yet.I thank you very much for the link for service information. I will get engine and Miller SN's soon. I want to do a compression or leak down test after I run it, so I will do some surfing on some small engine sites, once I know what model this is.I still don't yet have a serial number, but this is a 'Bluestar 2E AC DC.' The owner changed engines, but it is still the same basic model. It looks like I will have to pay some attention to the motor before I can go further into any electrical problems that might exist.The float bowl was a little crudded up and in the process of checking the sediment bowl I ruined the rubber seal around the screen, so I'm trying to find parts to get that fixed up so I can have gas to continue my motor work.

The oil was NASTY, so after running enough to get the oil warm I pulled the drain plug and left it to drain. A common cause of poor governor speed control is a weak governor spring.If he has to manually increase engine speed above proper weld speed to get it to weld, the problem may be in the electrical portion of the unit.If you don't have any form of tachometer to check engine speeds, you can go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a Kill-a-Watt and set speeds according to auxiliary power output frequency which is my preference.Well guys I got it running last night, but have yet to strike an arc with it. I like the way the machine is made and feel that I can make a very good welder out of it before I'm finished.Thanks again for everyones generous help.There are a number of Blue Star units so you'll need to post up the welder unit SN (two letters followed by 6 numbers) and the specific Blue Star model (1E, 2E, 180, etc.) If the owner can get the unit to weld by revving up, the first thing to determine is whether or not he's manually bringing the engine up to proper weld speed or something higher (overspeeding).If just up to weld speed, the governor response/speed adjustment would be suspect and the engine is likely OK. I have lots of electronic experience so I feel that I will be able to deal with most anything electrical once I get to that point.At this point I only get a few minutes here and there to look at it and there's no rush.

I thought I had seen them on ebay and I rechecked this morning and I am correct, although they cost a few hundred dollars, at least they are available. He said well if it won't make spark, the motor is nothing but junk iron because the ignition module is no longer available. He also asked me if it made spark and I said yes. One of the guys in the shop told me that you can't get parts for these they're obsolete. Turns out they have a shop in the back that does all the Miller and Lincoln service for the area.

I cracked the carburetor fuel bowl drain and there was plenty of fuel. It will be fun to surprise the owner and see the look on his face.This is turning into a great thread! Before I'm all done there will be tons of information in the archives for the next guy that tackles one of these.I ran it a good bit Saturday and it was still blowing LOTS of oil! I ran it a good bit and it just slowed down and died as if it had run out of gas. If I make this thing run and operate well, I might paint it, put a new faceplate and decals on it.

It MIGHT be a breather issue, but it is most likely worn out in the cylinder/piston/rings department in which case I won't know what's up until I get it apart. I don't think it would be constant oil smoke if it were valve guides. When I start tearing everything apart I will clean and tighten all the connections.Saturday night I started getting a really nasty cold and I'm coughing like a smoker as I write this.It seems to me that the smoking has to be one of three things clogged up crankcase breather, valve guides or piston/ring/cylinder issues. I checked the OCV and was getting anywhere from about 65 to 75 Volts depending on engine speed. I sprayed a little carb cleaner in the carb and it would run a little before dieing so it wasn't an ignition problem I was afraid it was trying to sieze up, but the starter would spin it over quickly.I went to town to run some errands and when I came back it cranked up and ran again.

Does anyone know what I should see with a compression gauge spinning it over with the starter?Thanks again for all the great information.
